MORAL REASONS
Moral Reasons is one of the most personal ideas I’ve started writing for the next MARROW project. It comes from a simple question: when the numbers, attention and applause disappear, what is left?
For me, the answer is bigger than music. It is family, purpose, character, where I came from, the people I have lost, the people still beside me, and the kind of person I want to be remembered as.
More than success
I wanted these lyrics to challenge the idea that success is only about streams, money or recognition. Those things can be exciting, but they cannot be the whole reason for creating.
“More than numbers on a screen,
More than proving what I could be.”
The song looks at getting older, making mistakes, learning from them and becoming more comfortable with moving differently — even when other people do not understand the reasons behind it.
Same roots. Bigger dreams.
There is also a part of my identity running directly through the song: Seychelles in my heart, the UK in my story, and everything life has taught me between the two.
“Same roots, bigger dreams, still carrying both,
Island in my blood everywhere that I go.”
I don’t want that influence to feel forced. Even in the production, the plan is to let a subtle Seychellois/Sega character sit underneath cinematic hip-hop and soul rather than turning the song into an obvious island record.
The moment everything stops
The bridge is probably the emotional centre of the song. I imagine the drums disappearing completely and leaving only piano, atmosphere and voice.
“My word.
My people.
My purpose.
My reasons.”
That is really what the title means to me. Moral Reasons is not about pretending to be perfect. It is about having something underneath the ambition — something that still matters when nobody is watching.
Full lyrics — work in progress
[Intro] Yeah… They ask me why I still do it. Why I still write, still build, still believe. Truth is— I got my reasons. Moral reasons. [Verse 1] I’ve been down roads I wouldn’t walk again, Lost a few people, found a few friends, Made some mistakes that I can’t undo, But every wrong turn showed me what was true. I used to chase things I thought I needed, Wanted that love, wanted to be seen, Now if the room don’t clap, I’m still me, I don’t need the whole world believing in me. Got scars I don’t put on display, Got names in my heart that never fade, And every time life put weight on my shoulders, I came back different, wiser and older. [Pre-Chorus] So if I move different, there’s a reason, If I stay quiet, there’s a reason, If I love hard, if I stand my ground, There’s more behind me than what you see now. [Chorus] I do it for moral reasons, More than money, more than seasons, More than numbers on a screen, More than proving what I could be. I do it for the ones I love, For the ones still watching from above, If you ask me why I’m still believing— I do it for moral reasons. [Verse 2 – Rap] Same roots, bigger dreams, still carrying both, Island in my blood everywhere that I go, Seychelles in my heart, UK in my story, Never needed shortcuts to measure my glory. I learned success ain’t a number or name, A million people knowing you don’t heal your pain, You can have the lights, you can have the applause, But what do you stand for when nobody calls? That’s when character talks and the ego gets quiet, When life gets heavy and you still keep trying, When family needs you, you show up first, Even when showing up makes your own life hurt. I’m not perfect—I never claimed that, I’ve fallen forward and I’ve stumbled back, But when my children look at the life that I’m leading, I want them to know Daddy had his reasons. [Bridge – stripped back] When the music stops, When the lights go black, When they forget my name, What do I have? My word. My people. My purpose. My reasons. And if that's all that's left of me… That's enough. [Verse 3] Dad, I hope somehow you see it, All these little dreams I kept believing, SELF-MADE wasn't saying I did it alone, It was building something I could call my own. For every door that never opened wide, Every little doubt I had to put aside, Every late-night session when nobody knew, Every single song—I left something true. I’m not trying to be somebody they remember, Just somebody my people can remember well, Someone who stood when standing wasn’t easy, Someone who gave them something they could feel. So tomorrow if the numbers disappear, I'll still make music, I'll still be here, Because somewhere between the man and the dream, I finally learned what MARROW really means. [Final Chorus] I do it for moral reasons, More than money, more than seasons, More than numbers on a screen, More than proving what I could be. I do it for the ones I love, For the ones still watching from above, And if you ask me why I’m still believing— I do it for moral reasons. [Outro] Music. Purpose. People. Progress. MARROW. Moral Reasons.
Still being built
These lyrics are complete as they stand today, but this is still a work in progress. The arrangement, production and even individual lines may evolve once I start living with the song and recording it properly.
I want to keep sharing parts of the next album while they are still being built — not just once everything is polished and finished. This is another piece of that journey.
